MOLOGA RIVER LODGE

Budget Guide to Limpopo, South Africa: Save Money While Seeing It All

Here’s an amazing bush getaway idea just one hour from Johannesburg that deserves a spot on your travel list — whether you’re planning a weekend escape with your partner, family, or friends. I recently had the pleasure of staying at one of Limpopo’s best lodges, Molonga River Lodge, located about an hour’s drive from both Pretoria and Johannesburg (without traffic, of course).

Let me tell you — the place is absolutely stunning! It’s so peaceful and tranquil; the only sounds you hear are birds chirping in the trees. The lodge offers a variety of accommodation options, from charming chalets and cozy suites to spacious cabins. Prices start at around R1,900 for a cabin, while the more luxurious suites — complete with a private jacuzzi overlooking the river — start from about R4,500 per night. Every room is beautifully designed, spacious, and fully equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay, including both a tub and a shower.

The lodge features a sparkling pool with breathtaking river views and a gorgeous on-site restaurant that gives off pure luxury vibes. During our stay, we enjoyed unforgettable sunset drinks by the river and had a delicious breakfast by the pool the next morning. Since Limpopo can get quite hot, we also spent a lot of time relaxing poolside — a must!

In terms of travel costs, we spent around R500 on fuel (depending on your car) and about R300 on tolls. When booking, I highly recommend choosing the breakfast-inclusive rate — the lodge is tucked away, and there aren’t many restaurants nearby. Plan to budget for both lunch and dinner on-site, around R250 per meal per person, which is reasonable for the quality and portion size.

Also, note that outside beverages aren’t allowed, but their wine selection is affordable and impressive — with bottles starting at just R70. We enjoyed a crisp bottle of white wine for only R130, perfect for a warm Limpopo evening.

To top it all off, Molonga River Lodge offers plenty of activities to enjoy on the property — from romantic picnics and quad biking to cycling and game drives — making it easy to have fun without overspending.

If you’re looking for a peaceful, budget-friendly bush getaway close to Johannesburg, this hidden gem in Limpopo is definitely worth adding to your travel list!
